the evolution of dance...

this is a fun you.tube video to watch... it actually is the #1 video of all time.

that is a number that is hard to imagine. with over 55 million views and 60,000 comments noted since it was loaded up in 2006, it is still going strong.

the evolution of dance is by comedian judson laipply. with over 30 song clips spanning over 50 years it is amusing to watch and to be reminded of all the silly dances that we came up with... i noticed that most of the top videos of "all time" from you.tube were music related so i guess i'm not the only one surfing you.tube looking for music...

now i have seen my hubby do some of these dances around the house every now and again, even just the other day, ... and i do think he does believe 'he is lookin' good...ahhh, who am i to tell him...we should all be dancing...

saturday music show....

bonnie ste croix... song of peace

it's the little things...

last year around the holiday season i was yet again, disappointed... as i walk through the fruit section at the grocery i'm trying to find those wonderful little berries...you know the ones that generally are stacked up so high to get your attention? hmmmm, there were only a few bags of cranberries...it was a sad day... every time i would need to run to the store (which is daily pretty much, since i am unorganized), i would search another store for my little berries.... another bag or two...but that was all...now me being me, can never take the last of anything, the last of a spice, the last ball of twine, not even the last bag of berries...for one never really knows if somebody may be coming in later that really NEEDS it...so my search would continue... before the holidays even arrived - they were gone...all gone...nowhere to be found...

i was just reading...and about to bounce off my chair...that the cranberry season will be off to a better than ever season...maine and mass., our berry bog states said there will be barrels and barrels of my little berries, plump and juicy....
there will be more than i can possibly cook up...cranberry sauce for the turkey, cranberry on my sandwiches, cranberry cheesecake, cranberry oatmeal cookies, just spoonfuls of cooked cranberries is wonderful to me....i will have cranberries any way that i possibly can come up with...(and lets not forget, they are stuffed full of really good stuff for your body....) i feel that after the last 2 years - and the shortage, we should honor this happy little tasty tart berry...

one day...perhaps next year i will make it up and over to the bogs... i cannot imagine how beautiful my berries would look on the waters top...i may bring more info. on cranberries to you....because i am obsessed about this little red berry...

answers to the previous blog...

i've received so many nice emails from all of you...thank you for all the positive comments...so many of you have commented that you too came to a fork in the road and had to make that hard decision of living your life or having your life live you.... yes, it is time to slow down to smell those roses...

i thought i'd answer some of the questions that i'm receiving - i know that 'i' know what i'm trying to say on my blog - but sometimes it doesn't come across clear to the reader - so i hope this helps with any questions that you may have had or be thinking....

i am not closing (nor dying - can't believe that's what hubby said he thought it sounded like when he read my blog) - i'm just cutting back on the number of pieces i will be doing a year...this is due to such a high demand of my artwork - i needed to slow things down...

i do have to work - i am not a trust fun baby, but a starving artist and i plan to stay that way...

you can order from me anytime - i will still be in the studio, making game boards as i always have...so that hasn't changed, just call or email me and you will be in my order book...

i will confirm your order when i receive it - but i will contact you again before i begin your pieces...that way you will know exactly when i am starting and when you will be receiving your pieces...

i will always be adding new designs - by spreading out orders over a longer period of time, i.e., 8 pieces a month vs. 30-40...this will give me more time in the studio to create new designs, whether gee's bend pieces, original designs or reproductions...

i plan to eventually have a monthly web site sale page: you will be emailed a notice when the sale begins and you will be able to buy the limited amount of pieces that are shown, immediately...and that will be nice for you...no waiting...

i hope this helps with some of the questions you were thinking...but let me know if you have more, and i will add them...thanks, diane

a grand announcement...

einstein once said: not everything that counts can be counted and not everything that can be counted counts...

it has come to my notice that i am semi retiring.... yes, it's the truth...funny how those things sneak up on you...

i have been creating game boards for 14 years now....and have enjoyed the successes that all artists strive for - people love them, want them, and collect them..., what more could an artist want...

but as fall approaches and the colorful season is upon me - i am stirred to realize that yes, i am in the fall of my own life...and one has to prepare for the upcoming winter years...

my good fortune of being involved in the creative industry began when i was just 19 years old - marketing and advertising...paste-up of ads was my forte...yes, back then it was done with a jar of glue, razor blade and ruler...my, how things have changed...

then it was on to writing commercials, photography, production at radio stations...and raising a family...and running a small company of art...

over the past 2 years my company has grown at such a fast rate due to much hard work, publicity (thanks country living magazine), word of mouth and collectors like you - my collectors cover the entire u.s., canada, and a few even in other countries...having nearly 400 people sign up for my email list - can be somewhat daunting...but it has been a great motivation to turn out new work...

my work will still be available....in a teeny tiny amounts....they will not be carried through stores anymore, what they have is all they have...they will not be sold through catalogs (thanks sundance for 5 years), but pieces will be available directly through me, as always, and exclusively through earth angels toys, jen o'connor...in a very limited amount...

why do i chose to continue working with earth angels?

jen and i have had a wonderful working relationship for many years, and jen truly understands the labor and time that is taken with each piece, she understands that art is not a mass production item...i cannot produce my work quickly...i cannot produce the amount to meet the demands... i can only produce a small amount, a handful a month ... in the past i have been known to create more than 500 pieces in a year during a catalog season...but those are the days of my youth, no sleep - 24 - 7 it seemed...and ohhhh, how the body can't sling wood anymore... earth angels understands all of this, after all, her company is very similar to an artists studio...and her challenges are very similar to my own...her clients appreciate the craftsmanship of each and every piece...and do not want things to be rushed...they are the collectors of american folk art...

what will there be for you - collectors?

my guess is more new designs, more gee's bend based boards, a monthly invitation for you to view finished pieces that can be sent to you directly (no more waiting)...one of a kinds...and yes, you can still order from my website...and yes, i will still be 'here'...i will just be creating art piece by piece, in limited amounts...and will fill my order book according to 8 pieces of art a month....but as i have worked with all of you over the years i realize that you do not mind when your game boards will arrive...you appreciate the craft, and will wait until i can start your pieces...if my books are full until february...you are content to wait until february for me to begin your game board... there will not be anymore 'overselling', it pushes me into a mass production company, instead of a small art studio, which is where i need to be...

so as the leaves begin to change in my mountain region preparing for winter, i too begin to make changes for my own winter season.....

wow...check this artist out...

jenny lou sherburne

i wanted to share jenny's pots with you... they are amazing...i found jenny and her work in the next town over...blowing rock, nc. during the summer and early fall blowing rock accepts the creme de la creme of artists in about a 3 state radius, to celebrate summer with us in the much anticipated event 'art in the park'... let me give you the setting here...

nearly 100 artists and their wares, a beautiful small town mountain setting - (after all, this is where the stories of 'mitford days' were taken and written from...), are you in heaven?

and as you meet the artists, ooh and awe over their work you are reminded of the talent in the universe that you have yet to meet...and you waddle to your car, pieces under your arms, in your purse and as many bags full that you can afford...

jenny's pots grabbed me from the get-go....i'm a real teapot and pitcher fan and what fun her pieces are, they make everyone gathering in her tent smile...i knew i just had to share these with you... and when you visit her website - you will see that her pieces have been shown in galleries, museums and magazines - she has won countless awards, taught at really high end craft schools...and on and on and on....i was really impressed with what she has achieved...

here is what jenny has to say...

"I believe that life is a gift. Making pots is my way of celebrating and maintaining this belief. The creative process compels me to listen to an inner voice, my intuition which, in turn, provides me clues about how to live my life.My inspirations range from garlic cloves to onion domes, from the Isle of Crete to the Land of Oz, and from Antonio Gaudi to Dr. Seuss. I see beauty, humor and vigor everywhere and I try to create pots that embody these values. The cross-pollination between my life and work nourishes both as I strive to communicate a world view of wonder, curiosity and joy."

and she has done just that...

i just love these parfait cups - wouldn't they be fun to serve in...check out her site to view more pieces, to order, for her show schedule...or for any questions that you might have... here is her link -

just a stream of thought....

it's early morning - so much to do today - the famous balancing act between art and home... today i plan to black line boards, sand and stain...the weather is making me horribly behind in sending you your boards - for it's cooling off here, chilly mornings of 50 - and the game boards are retaliating by sleeping on the racks for an extra week... i too want to sleep during this time - window open above my bed - cool breeze easing in - down comforter and blankets piled up high...

picked up wood at the woodcutters - a pretty drive that is out to the country passing the christmas tree farms...i stopped at one of the overlooks on the blue ridge parkway and took some photos to share....and that is something else to do today - chop up the wood for the molding and paint - another fiasco in the cool weather - things just don't want to dry... so on the next clear, sunny day, the boards will be out on the stairs sun drying - works well even in the snow...

thought i should make some soup today too... we will be outside digging up lilies that need to be moved along with many hostas... and the planting of some mums to perk up the place for a couple of months... so soup sounds perfect at the end of a chilly day...

and i'm thrilled, yesterday i was sitting at football practice with my friend, twanna - and she was just knitting away...well knitting is always something i have wanted to learn... after all, you can never have to many scarves and hats up here in the mountains...

now i will admit, a couple of years ago, my mom tried to teach me how to knit...it was a disaster - not on her part, but i just couldn't get it - she might as well as put a mask over my eyes - well after some time of trying - she said she just didn't know what the problem was - that i should look at these simple diagrams, maybe that would help (visual learning)?, but nope - was totally strange to me...

yesterday i was told that yes, i indeed could knit and that twanna would teach me....i said that this probably wasn't a great time - i had a lot on my mind - ADD, so to speak....and i just knew that i wouldn't be able to figure this out unless i had the perfect learning conditions....well i was wrong...i was just knitting away....she said that she is left handed, and that it might be difficult for me to follow....nope...i guess what i was needing was a left handed teacher....it all made sense to me - and today i'm going to pull out my grandma's knitting needles and get going on a scarf...for one should wear really cool scarves if they can....

i also heard that there is a pow wow this morning.... and that it is really not to be missed... authentic indian music played on drums accompany authentically dressed costumed dancers.... it's heading just down the mountain a little bit - so i think i will check it out for a couple of hours....

and lets not forget - a birthday party this afternoon too....and laundry for the week....

Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt

September 16, 2008 - December 14, 2008

This exhibition takes a fresh look at the quilting traditions in the community of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, introducing new artists and motifs in works dating from the early twentieth century through 2005.

Presented are approximately seventy-four extraordinary quilts that demonstrate how the artists play upon the structure or "architecture" of traditional quilt patterns. Each quilt is unique, yet shares a common visual vocabulary with others made in Gee’s Bend. With newly discovered work from the 1930s to the 1980s, as well as more recent designs by established quilt makers and the younger generation they have inspired, the exhibition documents the development of key patterns—such as housetop, courthouse steps, flying geese, and strip quilting—through outstanding examples.

This exhibition is supported by a MetLife Foundation Museum and Community Connections grant, by The Pew Charitable Trusts, and by The Women's Committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Education and community outreach programs are funded by The Delphi Project Foundation, Reliance Standard Life Insurance Company, the Connelly Foundation, Paul K. Kania, and Lynne and Harold Honickman. Promotional support is provided by NBC 10 WCAU and The Philadelphia Tribune.

you know when you are surfing the web....you click on one link and then another and another until eventually you are so lost in the internet that you can't remember where you started from? i was link clicking from the philadelphia site and found so many more things to read about gee's bend...

so here is more info about the little, now famous, town.

About Gee's Bend - Named after Joseph Gee, the first white man to settle in the area in the early 1800s, the community is home to some seven hundred residents, many of who are descendants of the slaves who worked Gee’s plantation (sold to his relative, Mark Pettway, in 1845). After emancipation many freed slaves took the name Pettway and continued to make their living off the land as tenant farmers or sharecroppers. Quilt making had always been a domestic responsibility for the women of the community, and had always been considered as well as a form of personal expression.

Martin Luther King, Jr., spoke in Gee’s Bend in 1965; shortly after, many residents attempted to register to vote. Those who marched were sent to jail, fired from their jobs, and often lost their homes. The Freedom Quilting Bee was organized in 1966, and the townswomen subsequently earned income by creating quilts sold at large department stores such as Bloomingdale’s, Saks, and Sears.

The quilts in this exhibition are drawn from the collection of the Tinwood Alliance, Atlanta, a nonprofit foundation for the support of African American vernacular art founded by William Arnett. Arnett first traveled to Gee’s Bend, a small and isolated rural community situated on a peninsula on the Alabama River, in 1997 in search of Annie Mae Young, whose quilt he had seen in Roland Freeman’s book on African American quilters, Communion of the Spirit.

there will be another exhibit that will go hand and hand with the quilt exhibit -

Linda Day Clark: The Gee's Bend Photographs

photo titled:
The Road to Paradise, 2002

September 16, 2008 - December 14, 2008
In conjunction with Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt, the Museum is presenting an installation of approximately twenty-five photographs by Baltimore photographer Linda Day Clark, who has traveled to Gee’s Bend annually since 2002 when she made her first visit on assignment for The New York Times.

Clark’s photographs capture the richness of the rural landscape as well as the strong sense of community forged by the women who are carrying on the quilt making tradition in Gee's Bend. One image, titled The Road to Paradise (shown here), shows a narrow lane of red clay earth surrounded by pine trees that leads to a vista known as Paradise Point among locals. Also included in this exhibition are powerful photographic portraits of the artists such as Mary Lee Bendolph, Creola Pettway, Arlonzia Pettway, and Annie Mae Young, whose work is featured in the Gee’s Bend exhibition.

a bumper sticker...

i'm all about bumper stickers... i love to come up behind a car and just read away... being in a college town, there are many to read, many opinions and much to make me laugh...

i have had a sticker or two... but they always seem to disappear off the back of my car... i blame this on my husband...he hates bumper stickers, (or at least the ones that my car chooses to wear). this is a never ending fight between us... i will find a sticker that i then put on my car... after several weeks it is gone... i point the finger at him... he proceeds to claim that he didn't do it, "it must have fallen off", he claims...

i know he is taking them off, for the little one has told on him...

i also find it interesting how my husbands stickers, that annoy me, seem to stay on his truck....hmmmm....and i wonder how long it will be before he notices that i changed out his front license plate on his truck and replaced it with a football team that he despises....(thanks for the help in that eddie).

but i still continue to put a sticker on my car every now and then...(the peace signs seem to "blow off" the quickest i've noticed...)

the last sticker that he claimed that he "didn't remove" was my john lennon sticker...

imagine... you may say i'm a dreamer, but i'm not the only one

so i've decided to add this song to my blog, for it is one of my favorites... and i feel that whether or not i believe in each and every word that he writes, the message is still clear.... can't we all just live side by side...

Michael Lucarelli plays Moonlight Sonata...

feather art....

Julie Thompson - Featherlady Studio...

my dear friend, pandora, always sends me the most interesting art in emails...which i often times share with you on my blog...and again, i will do so...

i was amazed when i saw these feather pieces...i had never seen painted feathers before and found them intriguing right from the beginning...i felt like i must research this medium, after all, an art that i hadn't been exposed to in any of my travels?

believe it or not... there are MANY feather artists...just one click to google and names were coming up to surf. it seems to be something that is focused on in the northeast - a combination of found objects, the inspiration of the outdoor life, and the talents of an artist - all collide to bring you these amazing pieces...

i wanted to focus on one artist in particular... Julie Thompson, Featherlady Studio... her artwork is to be appreciated with a fine eye... with each piece taking several weeks to complete, only a limited number of pieces are available each year from her studio...

a bit about julie....

"Being around such awe-inspiring scenery, the wildlife, and the people has given me a tremendous appreciation for the Pacific Northwest and all its unique qualities. These influences permeate most of my works. I'm in the Puget Sound region.

I began painting feathers back in 1990, purely as a means of putting to use all the broad sturdy wing feathers that my mother's peacocks would shed. I had never seen this done before, but knowing the bonding properties of acrylic paint, I thought it was a feasible experiment. I began with simple subject matters like pictographs and still-life's, but soon that grew to a very broad range of subject matter.

I learned my method of pen-and-ink stipple while working as a graphics specialist for an archaeological firm. Lithic illustration was quite a challenge, and I would marvel over the fine tight detail in printed illustrations. I soon found that this style worked very nicely in wildlife illustration, and that I could achieve an enormous amount of detail, form, light and shadow, and a wealth of textures."

this is all so fascinating to me - i hope you enjoy reading and looking over her work... and here is a direct link to julie's site... i have only featured a very small segment of her work.... each and every piece is a small special treasure...available framed.... so go and browse!
